Sri Lanka To Continue Pakistan Tour Amid Security Fears
A serious suicide bombing near a court in Islamabad that killed 12 people has led to deep security worries for the visiting Sri Lanka national cricket team in Pakistan. Despite several players requesting to leave the tour for safety reasons, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) directed the team to stay and complete the series. The board warned that any member who leaves without authorization will face a formal review.
Pakistan Assures Safe Environment
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has worked with Pakistani security agencies to shore up protection for the team. PCB Chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Sri Lankan officials and gave assurances that measures are in place. The remaining one-day internationals (ODIs) are still scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi, and the subsequent tri-nation T20 series is set to proceed from November 18.
Legacy Of Past Attacks Looms
The decision to press ahead comes nearly 17 years after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore, which derailed international cricket in Pakistan for years. While Pakistan has been rebuilding trust with visiting teams, the latest incident underscores ongoing security risks. The SLC and PCB say they will continue monitoring the situation closely but are committed to completing the tour as planned.
