Sri Lanka Stays On Pakistan Tour After Army Chief’s Assurance
Sri Lanka’s cricket team has continued its tour of Pakistan despite strong security concerns following a suicide bombing in Islamabad that killed 12 people. Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, personally reached out to Sri Lankan authorities to assure them of enhanced security measures. His intervention came after several Sri Lankan players expressed a desire to leave the country due to safety fears.
Rawalpindi Security Intensified For 2nd ODI
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi oversaw heightened security arrangements in Rawalpindi ahead of the second ODI. Army and paramilitary forces were deployed around the stadium, team hotel and travel routes. The venue is located roughly 10 km from the blast site, prompting a multi-layered security review and stricter movement protocols for players and officials.
Tour Continues Despite High Tension
Although some Sri Lankan players requested permission to return home, Sri Lanka Cricket instructed the team to complete the tour. Officials stated that withdrawal would negatively impact cricketing relations and Pakistan’s return as a safe host nation. The remaining fixtures are being closely monitored, with both boards maintaining continuous communication as Pakistan attempts to safeguard international cricket on home soil.
