Sri Lanka Faces Deadly Floods, Landslides, 56 Dead

Heavy rains sweeping across Sri Lanka have triggered floods and multiple landslides, causing the death toll to rise to 56. The worst hit regions are the central mountainous, tea-growing districts of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, where many casualties were reported.

Disruptions Intensify Across the Island

In response to the disaster, the government ordered all schools and public offices to remain closed. Floodwaters and debris have washed away roads, blocked railway tracks, and damaged over 600 homes. Authorities halted passenger train services and deployed helicopters, boats and rescue teams to evacuate stranded residents.

Rescue Operations Underway

Rescue efforts are continuing in rainfall-affected regions, with military, police and civilian agencies working to locate the missing and provide relief. Floodwaters have submerged fields and residential areas, forcing thousands to evacuate or seek shelter in temporary relief camps.

Severe Weather and Warning Issued

Heavy rains, overflowing reservoirs and unstable terrain contributed to the disaster. Meteorological agencies have issued alerts for further rainfall in several districts. Residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been urged to stay alert and relocate if needed.
