Sresan Pharma Owner Arrested in Coldrif Case
G. Ranganathan, the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, has been arrested in Chennai over the deaths of children linked to the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup. Authorities confirmed that the arrest followed evidence of toxic contamination in the medicine.
Toxic Contamination Found
Laboratory tests revealed that Coldrif batches contained diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical often used in industrial products but fatal if ingested. Investigations confirmed that the contaminated syrups were consumed by children, leading to multiple deaths, particularly in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh.
Legal Action and Investigations
Ranganathan will be taken to Madhya Pradesh for further legal proceedings. Police have sealed the company’s manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. Officials are also probing whether quality control procedures were bypassed and if lapses occurred in the approval process for the syrup’s distribution.
Regulatory Crackdown
Following the tragedy, authorities have intensified inspections of pharmaceutical companies across India. Other syrups, including Respifresh TR and ReLife, have also been declared unsafe after testing positive for DEG contamination. Regulators say stricter compliance checks will now be enforced.
