Sports Ministry Lifts WFI Suspension; Brij Bhushan Reacts

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has lifted the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), restoring its status as the National Sports Federation (NSF) for wrestling. The suspension, imposed on December 24, 2023, was a result of governance issues within the federation. The decision to revoke it follows corrective measures, including relocating the WFI office away from the premises of former president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Brij Bhushan Singh’s Response

Reacting to the development, former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claimed that justice had prevailed. He stated that despite multiple conspiracies and false allegations against him for over two years, his opponents had failed in their attempts. Singh also pointed out that the suspension had negatively impacted Indian wrestling, disrupting training camps and limiting athletes’ opportunities in international competitions.

Background of the Suspension

The WFI suspension was linked to protests by Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medalists, who accused Singh of misconduct. These allegations led to widespread demonstrations, an internal probe, and the eventual decision to suspend the federation’s functioning. During this period, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed an ad-hoc committee to oversee WFI’s operations, ensuring minimal disruption to the sport.

Impact on Indian Wrestling and Future Prospects

The suspension had significant consequences, leading to delays in training camps and uncertainty for wrestlers. With the revocation of the ban, the focus now shifts to ensuring a structured and transparent administration. Singh urged the new leadership, under President Sanjay Singh, to prioritize athlete welfare, conduct fair trials, and resume training camps and tournaments in coordination with the government.

The reinstatement of the WFI marks a turning point for Indian wrestling, offering a fresh opportunity to move forward with stability. The emphasis remains on governance reforms, athlete development, and maintaining the integrity of the sport.
