Spain Wildfire Kills 12, Leaves 23 Missing
At least 12 people have died and 23 remain missing after a fast-moving wildfire swept through parts of Almería province in southern Spain. The blaze trapped several victims in vehicles and forced hundreds of residents to leave threatened communities.
Spain Wildfire Kills 12 in Almería
The fire broke out near Bédar and Los Gallardos in Andalusia before spreading rapidly through dry vegetation and difficult mountainous terrain.
Strong winds, extreme heat and sudden changes in the fire’s direction complicated evacuation and firefighting operations. Several victims were reportedly found inside burned vehicles or along routes used while attempting to escape the flames.
Many of those killed are believed to have been foreign nationals, although authorities are continuing formal identification procedures.
Twenty-Three Missing After Deadly Blaze
Emergency teams are searching for 23 people reported missing as officials warn that the casualty figures could change.
Around 800 residents were evacuated from affected areas, while others were instructed to shelter in place because roads had become too dangerous. Authorities said some escape routes were quickly surrounded by fire, turning vehicles and narrow rural roads into potential traps.
One resident described the view of the approaching flames as surreal, with thick smoke covering the sky and fire visible across nearby hills.
Firefighters Battle Extreme Conditions
Approximately 150 firefighters and more than 200 military emergency personnel were deployed to control the wildfire and search damaged areas.
The blaze has burned thousands of hectares, while steep terrain and shifting winds continue to hamper operations.
Early indications suggested that a fallen power line may have started the fire, although the cause has not been officially confirmed and remains under investigation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences to the victims’ families as authorities continued rescue, identification and containment efforts.
