Spain Moves to Replace Ambassador to India
Spain has initiated the process of replacing its Ambassador to India, Juan Antonio March Pujol, following allegations involving diplomatic protocol, cultural event funding and financial dealings. The allegations have not been proven, but the matter has reportedly been referred to Spain’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

Alfredo Martínez Serrano, currently Spain’s Ambassador to Canada, is expected to take over the diplomatic posting in New Delhi.
The change will require India’s approval before the formal handover can take place. The transition is expected within the coming weeks once the necessary diplomatic procedures are completed.
March has served as Spain’s Ambassador to India since 2024.
Cultural Concert Funding Row Sparks Scrutiny
The controversy centres on allegations that March sought sponsorship from Spanish companies operating in India and the Rajasthan government for cultural concerts without informing Spain’s Foreign Ministry.
Some of the proposed performances were reportedly connected with the Spain-India Dual Year and coincided with the ambassador’s birthday. The cultural events were ultimately blocked by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
March is also alleged to have reached an arrangement with an Indian visa-processing company for a €5,000 contribution towards a cultural event in Rajasthan.
Financial Allegations Remain Under Investigation
Spanish diplomatic authorities have reportedly examined allegations involving the use of public resources, sponsorship arrangements and compliance with official procedures.
Questions have also been raised over the use of diplomatic privileges and the ambassador’s family connections to professional activities in India.
However, the allegations remain under scrutiny and have not been established as wrongdoing.
Spain’s move to appoint a replacement comes as Madrid and New Delhi continue expanding bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, defence and cultural relations.
