South Korea Awards Trump Its Highest Honour
U.S. President Donald Trump was honoured with South Korea’s highest civilian award, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, during his state visit on October 29. The award was presented by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at a ceremony in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla dynasty.
Ceremony And Symbolism
Alongside the medal, Trump was gifted a replica of the golden crown worn by Silla royalty, symbolising peace, prosperity and the historic ties between the two nations. The South Korean government said the honour recognises Trump’s past role in peace initiatives on the Korean Peninsula and reflects the strong U.S.–South Korea partnership.
Strategic Context
Trump’s South Korea visit includes discussions on trade, defence and investment. Seoul is pushing for tariff relief and stronger U.S. security commitments amid regional challenges. The award underscores South Korea’s intent to deepen cooperation with Washington as both countries navigate shifting regional power dynamics.
