South African Lawmaker Congratulates India on BRICS 2026 Presidency

A senior South African parliamentary official has publicly congratulated India on assuming the BRICS Presidency for 2026, recognising the growing role India will play in the bloc of emerging economies. The statement highlighted the importance of strong leadership as BRICS prepares to host key meetings and the 18th BRICS Summit next year.

Support for India’s Leadership Role

The lawmaker, chairperson of the International Relations Committee of the South African Parliament, said that India’s upcoming presidency reflects its growing influence within BRICS and its commitment to cooperative development. He underlined that the grouping will benefit from India’s focus on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability during its tenure. India will formally take over the presidency of BRICS on 1 January 2026 and is expected to host the BRICS Summit, which brings together leaders from member countries to discuss political and economic cooperation.

BRICS Goals and Cooperation

BRICS, a coalition of major emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded in recent years to include additional members. The bloc works on issues such as economic development, global governance reform, sustainable growth and trade cooperation. India’s presidency is seen as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation among member nations and promote shared goals like inclusive development and support for the Global South.

Broader Diplomatic Context

India’s leadership of BRICS follows its recent roles in other international forums, where it has emphasised multilateral cooperation, economic resilience and digital innovation. As president of BRICS next year, India will set the agenda for summit discussions and multilateral activities across the bloc.
