SIT Halts Tirupati Laddu Adulteration Probe as SC Reviews Case
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Andhra Pradesh government to investigate the alleged adulteration of Tirupati laddus has suspended its probe on Tuesday. The decision comes in compliance with a directive from the Supreme Court, as the case is currently under judicial review. The SIT had been actively investigating allegations that animal fats were being used in the preparation of the famous Tirupati laddus, which are offered as prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala.
Andhra Pradesh DGP Confirms Pause in Investigation
Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao confirmed that the SIT’s investigation has been temporarily stalled due to the Supreme Court’s intervention. Speaking on the matter, he said that the team had collected substantial information by visiting various facilities of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), including procurement and sample collection areas. “They examined people and recorded statements,” he added. However, the probe will remain on hold until October 3, following the Supreme Court’s directive.
Supreme Court Questions State’s Allegations
The Supreme Court, on Monday, raised concerns over Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s public accusations about the use of adulterated ghee in the preparation of laddus. The bench, consisting of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan, noted that the laboratory test report presented in the case was “not clear at all” and suggested that the tested ghee sample was not the one used in the laddus. The court remarked that unless the state was certain about the adulteration, such public allegations should not have been made.
Future of Investigation Hinges on SC Decision
The Supreme Court has asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to assist in determining whether the SIT probe should continue or if an independent agency should take over the investigation. Until further directives are issued by the apex court on October 3, the SIT’s investigation will remain suspended.
The case has attracted widespread attention as the Tirupati laddu is considered sacred by devotees and any allegations of its adulteration are viewed with serious concern. The outcome of the Supreme Court’s review will be pivotal in deciding the future course of action regarding the ongoing controversy.
