SIT Clears Vantara of Alleged Violations
The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has given a clean chit to Vantara, the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The report submitted on 12 September 2025 confirmed there were no legal or regulatory violations.
SIT’s Scope of Inquiry
Constituted on 25 August 2025, the SIT was tasked with examining complaints that Vantara acquired animals, including elephants, in violation of wildlife and international trade rules. It also reviewed the welfare, upkeep, and living conditions of animals at the facility.
Key Findings
The SIT’s three-day inspection concluded that Vantara complied with the Wildlife Protection Act and CITES norms. It also found no evidence to support allegations of animal mistreatment. The court described the inquiry as detailed and sufficient, ruling out the need for further investigation.
Court’s Direction
A bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and Prasanna B. Varale accepted the SIT’s findings and directed Vantara to continue following the panel’s recommendations. The court emphasised that compliance must remain consistent in future operations.
Background of the Facility
Vantara, also known as the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, is operated by the Reliance Foundation. Spread over 3,500 acres, it shelters thousands of animals across more than 2,000 species. It had faced scrutiny after NGOs and media raised concerns about animal acquisition and management practices.
