Siraj, Head Penalized for ICC Code of Conduct Breach

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj and Australian batsman Travis Head have been found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing Test series between India and Australia. The charges, confirmed in an ICC statement, stem from separate incidents of unsportsmanlike behavior on the field.

Both players are set to face penalties, with the ICC emphasizing its commitment to maintaining discipline in international cricket. The incidents occurred during the third day of the opening Test in Adelaide, a match that has already seen heightened tensions between the two teams.

Separate Incidents of Misconduct

Mohammed Siraj was charged under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code, which deals with “using language, actions, or gestures that could provoke an aggressive response from a batter upon dismissal.” The fast bowler reportedly directed remarks toward Travis Head after dismissing him, prompting an immediate reaction from the Australian player.

Travis Head, meanwhile, faced a charge under Article 2.1, which relates to “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.” Head’s actions involved showing dissent following an umpire’s decision, further escalating on-field tensions.

Penalties and Consequences

Both players have accepted their respective charges, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. Siraj has been fined 50% of his match fee, while Head will forfeit 25% of his match earnings. Additionally, both players have been handed one demerit point each, which will remain on their disciplinary records for the next 24 months.

Maintaining Sportsmanship in Cricket

The ICC has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to misconduct, emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum on the field. “The spirit of cricket must be upheld at all times,” the governing body stated in its release.

As the series continues, both teams will be under scrutiny to ensure compliance with the ICC’s regulations. The incidents underscore the intensity of the India-Australia rivalry, with both sides vying for supremacy in the high-stakes Test series.
