SIM Binding Made Mandatory for Messaging Apps

The Department of Telecommunications has directed all major online messaging platforms to implement SIM binding for user accounts. Under this system, an app will only function when used with the same SIM card that was registered during account creation.

Apps to Auto-Logout Web Sessions Every Six Hours

The directive also states that web and desktop versions of messaging apps must automatically log users out at least once every six hours. To continue using the service, users will have to re-authenticate by scanning a QR code or completing the platform’s login process.

Platforms Get 90 Days to Comply

Messaging companies have been given 90 days to roll out SIM binding and a total of 120 days to file compliance reports. Officials said failure to comply could lead to action under India’s updated telecom cybersecurity rules for 2025.

Rule Aims to Tackle Fraud and Misuse

The government says SIM binding will help reduce online fraud, identity misuse, and illegal activities conducted through messaging apps. However, the change could cause inconvenience to frequent travellers, users who switch SIM cards, and those who rely on multiple devices.
