Sikh Groups Warn Labour of Boycott Over Blue Star Inquiry Delay

The Sikh Federation UK has warned of a widespread campaign to boycott Labour Party politicians if Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government fails to announce a judge-led public inquiry into Britain’s role in the 1984 Operation Blue Star by the end of July. The move could escalate tensions with the Sikh diaspora ahead of the next election cycle.

Gurdwara Unity Behind the Demand

The ultimatum is backed by an unprecedented letter signed by 455 gurdwaras and Sikh organizations across the UK. These bodies are demanding accountability over what they believe was covert British involvement in the Indian Army’s operation at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The event, seen by many Sikhs as a deep cultural and spiritual wound, remains a politically sensitive issue 41 years later.

Labour’s Pre-Election Commitment in Question

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner had pledged to initiate such an inquiry ahead of the 2024 general election, a commitment also echoed in Labour’s last two manifestos. However, nearly a year later, Sikh organizations argue that the promise remains unfulfilled. The Federation insists the probe must be public, judge-led, and focused on both the UK government’s alleged role and the long-term impact on the Sikh community.

Political Fallout Looms

From August 1, if the government does not act, the Federation plans to “no-platform” Labour MPs—refusing them the opportunity to speak at gurdwaras or community events. This tactic, already being organized nationwide, is expected to significantly dent Labour’s outreach among Sikh voters. The Federation also hinted at rising support for Reform UK and other independents in traditionally Labour-dominated constituencies.

In addition to direct action, Sikh groups are holding talks with the Liberal Democrats and SNP to secure broader parliamentary backing for the proposed inquiry, potentially cornering Labour on a moral and political front.

With the clock ticking toward July-end, the Sikh Federation’s message is loud and clear: broken promises on historical justice could carry a heavy political price.
