Shreyas Iyer Seeks Break From Red-Ball Format
India batter Shreyas Iyer has formally written to the BCCI asking for a break from red-ball cricket (first-class and Test formats). He cited persistent back stiffness, saying his body cannot cope with playing over the four days typical in longer format matches.
Health Concerns Cited
Iyer told selectors that he has trouble maintaining fitness for red-ball matches. He said he cannot field or bat continuously beyond day three, making him vulnerable in multi-day games. He also referenced a Ranji Trophy match last year where he had to rest mid-overs.
Implications for Selection
In his letter, Iyer said he will skip red-ball cricket for the coming months and re-evaluate his availability based on fitness, consulting physios and trainers. The move may put his prospects for Test selection on hold, especially given India’s focus on continuous readiness in that format.
Current Assignment Dropped
Iyer was named captain of India A’s red-ball side in their series against Australia A, but he has now withdrawn from the second match. The BCCI and selectors have been informed of his decision.
Bigger Picture
Shreyas Iyer has dealt with back issues and lost his central contract in 2024 following injuries. Though he remains active in limited-overs formats, this break signals a shift in his red-ball priorities.
