Shreyas Iyer Explains Break From Red-Ball Cricket
India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has opened up about his decision to step away from red-ball cricket for the next six months. He said the move comes after noticing a drop in intensity during the longer formats, especially in four-day and Test matches, which affected his overall performance.
Intensity and Fitness Concerns
Iyer explained that the longer duration of red-ball cricket often takes a toll on his body, particularly with recurring back stiffness linked to an earlier surgery. “My intensity tends to drop when I am on the field for long periods,” he admitted, stressing that he wanted to address these issues before committing to the format again.
Focus on Recovery and White-Ball Formats
The 30-year-old confirmed that he will use this break to work on fitness, resilience and mental focus. He clarified that the decision was proactive and not due to external pressure. While stepping away from red-ball cricket temporarily, Iyer will remain available for white-ball matches, where he continues to be an important part of India’s setup.
