Shivakumar Clarifies Controversial Kerala Remarks
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has clarified his earlier remarks that were widely criticised as insensitive toward people from Kerala. The controversy emerged amid a political row over a demolition and eviction drive in Bengaluru, which drew sharp reactions from Kerala’s political leaders.
Clarification on His Comments
Shivakumar said his comment was aimed at opposition from the Kerala government regarding the demolition drive, not at the people of Kerala themselves. He stated that his words were meant to address what he described as political interference by the Kerala government in Karnataka’s internal affairs. He insisted there is a “cordial relationship” between him and the people of Kerala and said he respects Keralites and will continue to campaign in the state.
Shivakumar accused some political opponents of twisting his statement to create a misunderstanding and “confusion” among people. He reiterated that his remarks were not intended to target any community or residents from another state.
Backdrop of the Demolition Dispute
The remarks came after the Karnataka government demolished unauthorised structures in parts of north Bengaluru as part of an encroachment removal exercise. Kerala’s Chief Minister expressed concern over the action, describing it as aggressive policy against minority communities. Shivakumar defended the action as lawful and necessary, saying it targeted illegal encroachments and that genuine evacuees were being offered rehabilitation support.
Political Reactions
The BJP and some leaders in Kerala condemned Shivakumar’s original phrasing as divisive, intensifying the political debate between leaders of different states. Shivakumar maintained that his clarification should dispel misunderstandings and that his focus remains on governance and respectful inter-state relations.
