Shashi Tharoor Says US Tariffs Cost India Jobs

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said recent U.S. tariffs imposed under President Donald Trump are hurting India’s economy. He claimed about 1.35 lakh jobs (135,000) have already been lost in Surat’s gems and jewellery sector. Sectors like seafood and general manufacturing are also feeling negative effects.

Need To Diversify Exports

Tharoor urged India to look beyond traditional export markets. He said depending heavily on a few countries, especially when policies can change unilaterally there, poses a major risk.

Criticism Of Trump’s Style

Tharoor described Trump as “mercurial” and highlighted that past U.S. presidents have not displayed similar volatility. He also criticized what he sees as unpredictable policy decisions from Washington that affect trade and jobs.

Economic Fallout Warnings

Tharoor warned that unless corrective steps are taken, more jobs could be lost and key export industries may shrink. He also cautioned against assuming that trade disruptions will pass quickly.
