Shashi Tharoor Says India Can Persuade, Not Interfere in Bangladesh

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said that India cannot interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affairs but can use diplomatic channels to persuade Dhaka to protect minorities amid unrest in the neighbouring country. Tharoor’s comments came after reports of violent protests and the lynching of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh sparked concern in India.

Comments on Lynching and Minority Safety

Tharoor expressed deep concern over the lynching of a Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, who was killed by a mob that accused him of blasphemy. The incident drew sharp reactions from political leaders in India, with opposition figures urging stronger diplomatic engagement to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.

Tharoor stated that while India cannot intervene directly in another sovereign nation’s law enforcement, it can quietly urge the Bangladeshi government to uphold the rule of law and protect all communities. He highlighted the importance of following diplomatic norms and working through established channels to address human rights concerns.

Regional Diplomatic Approach

Tharoor noted that India’s relationship with Bangladesh is historically strong, rooted in cultural ties and mutual cooperation. He said that India should balance expressing concern with respecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty. According to him, persuasion through dialogue, rather than public criticism and pressure, is the more effective diplomatic strategy.

Broader Context of Unrest

Bangladesh has seen widespread protests and violent clashes following the death of the student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which triggered demonstrations in multiple cities. Reports indicate damage to public and private property and arrests by law enforcement in attempts to restore order. The situation has raised fears about rising communal tensions and the security of minority groups.

Tharoor’s remarks reflect a view that India should avoid direct interference, while still advocating for peaceful resolution and the protection of vulnerable populations in its neighbour.
