Shashi Tharoor Calls Putin Banquet “Warm And Engaging”
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor described the state banquet hosted for Russian President Vladimir Putin at Rashtrapati Bhavan as “warm and engaging”. The event was part of the official programme during Putin’s two-day visit to India and was hosted by President Droupadi Murmu.
Congress Questions Guest List
While Tharoor attended the banquet, senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge were not invited. The exclusion of key opposition figures drew criticism from within the party, with several leaders questioning the criteria and timing of the invitations. Tharoor’s presence at the event led to speculation, though he said he had been invited in his capacity as Chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs.
Tharoor Defends Attendance
Responding to questions, Tharoor maintained that attending a state banquet did not imply political agreement. He said that as a constitutional functionary he was expected to participate when invited. Tharoor also stated that protocol and institutional roles should not be confused with partisan politics.
Diplomatic Setting And Hospitality
The banquet featured a curated vegetarian menu and cultural elements reflecting Indian hospitality. The event formed part of a broader diplomatic engagement between India and Russia aimed at strengthening strategic ties. Discussions during Putin’s visit covered defence cooperation, energy, and ongoing bilateral projects.
