Shashi Tharoor Backs Karnataka Govt’s Bengaluru Demolition Drive
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly defended the Karnataka government’s demolition drive in Bengaluru, saying the action followed legal procedures and was not intended to provoke unnecessary controversy. His remarks came amid political debate over the removal of unauthorised structures in parts of the city.
Legal Basis and Government Position
Tharoor said the land where the demolitions took place belonged to the government and that notices were issued to residents before action was taken. He noted that the locations were previously used as a garbage dump and posed health and safety concerns, making them unsuitable for habitation. He emphasised that the state government promised temporary accommodation and permanent housing within months for those affected by the clearance drive. Tharoor said that since a solution had been outlined, there was no need to “unnecessarily provoke” the issue.
Court Directions and Due Process
Tharoor stressed that all actions must comply with court directions and legal norms. He claimed the Karnataka government adhered to these requirements and issued multiple notices in some cases before proceeding with demolition. He also said his comments were based on facts and legal considerations and not intended as a political stance.
Political and Public Reaction
The demolition drive has drawn attention from various political quarters. Critics have raised concerns about the impact on vulnerable residents and the narrative surrounding enforcement methods. Supporters argue the government is acting to uphold land laws and public safety. The issue continues to generate discussion about governance, legality, and humanitarian considerations in urban policy decisions.
