Shakib Al Hasan Unlikely to Return to Bangladesh Amid Unrest

Bangladesh cricket legend Shakib Al Hasan has confirmed that he is unlikely to return to his home country amid ongoing political unrest and legal troubles.

Shakib, currently residing in the United States with his family, has been a key figure in Bangladesh cricket but now faces uncertainty regarding his future in the country.

Shakib Al Hasan Facing Legal Troubles Amid Political Turmoil

Shakib’s decision comes in the wake of being accused in a murder case linked to protests that have rocked Bangladesh in recent months. The cricketer was a Member of Parliament under the Awami League-led government, which was ousted from power in August following nationwide protests. After the fall of the government, several Awami League politicians went into hiding, were arrested, or faced legal challenges, including Shakib, who was named in a case by the Adabor police station.

In a statement to ESPNcricinfo, Shakib expressed uncertainty about his immediate plans but made it clear that he is not planning to return to Bangladesh soon. “I am not sure where I am going next, but it is almost sure that I am not going home,” Shakib said.

Advised to Stay Away for Safety

Asif Mahmud, the current Youth and Sports Adviser of Bangladesh, also advised Shakib to remain abroad to avoid potential harm or “untoward circumstances.” In an interview with AFP, Mahmud explained that the decision was made to ensure the player’s safety and protect Bangladesh’s image during this turbulent time.

Despite his legal troubles, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has allowed Shakib to continue representing the national team unless proven guilty. Shakib recently played in a two-Test series against India, which many speculate might be his last for the national side.

Busy Cricket Season for Bangladesh

The political challenges come at a time when Bangladesh is preparing for a busy cricket season. The team is set to face South Africa in a home Test series starting October 21, followed by matches against Afghanistan and West Indies in the lead-up to the ICC Champions Trophy. Shakib’s absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the team will look to focus on the challenges ahead.

As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether Shakib will return to Bangladesh in the near future, given the legal and political turmoil he currently faces.
