Seven Militants Arrested in Manipur Amid Ongoing Ethnic Unrest

Security forces in Manipur have arrested seven militants affiliated with various banned insurgent groups, in a fresh crackdown against anti-national activities amidst the prolonged ethnic unrest in the state. The arrests were made during coordinated operations across multiple sensitive districts including Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur, and Churachandpur.

Security Forces Launch Targeted Operations

The operations were led by joint teams of the Manipur Police and central paramilitary forces. These militants were allegedly involved in extortion, abduction, and issuing threats to local traders and civilians. Officials also confirmed the recovery of a significant cache of weapons, including assault rifles, live cartridges, and tactical communication gear, which are now under forensic scrutiny.

According to intelligence inputs, some of the arrested individuals were previously under surveillance and had links to organized extortion rackets active in valley and hill districts.

Arrests Linked to Widening Ethnic Conflict

These developments come against the backdrop of ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities that has plagued Manipur since May 2023. The conflict erupted following the Meitei demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, triggering mass protests, arson, and communal attacks.

So far, more than 260 people have been killed and over 60,000 displaced, with numerous relief camps still operational across the state. The unrest has also emboldened militant outfits, many of which have taken advantage of the breakdown in law and order.

Ceasefire Withdrawal Against Kuki Militants

The government recently scrapped suspension of operations (SoO) agreements with insurgent groups like the Kuki National Army (KNA) and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), citing their leadership’s alleged involvement in criminal activities. These groups have been accused of abetting illegal poppy cultivation and fueling violence in the hill regions.

Security agencies are now reorienting their counter-insurgency approach, focusing on dismantling arms supply lines and reintegrating surrendered militants into civil life.

Long Road Ahead for Peace in Manipur

Despite intensified security deployments, lasting peace remains elusive. Political divisions, ethnic grievances, and the re-emergence of armed insurgents continue to complicate reconciliation efforts.

However, the recent arrests represent a small but important step towards restoring stability. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect all communities from both insurgent threats and retaliatory violence.
