Senate Democrats Block DHS Funding Bill
Senate Democrats have blocked a Republican-backed funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, increasing the risk of a partial US government shutdown. The move comes amid sharp disagreements over immigration enforcement and border security policy.
Immigration Policy at Core of Dispute
Democrats said they cannot support the funding bill unless changes are made to how immigration laws are enforced. They have raised concerns over the conduct of federal immigration agencies and are demanding tighter oversight, clearer operational rules, and greater accountability for enforcement actions.
Republicans Reject Changes
Republican lawmakers have opposed altering the Homeland Security funding package, arguing that it weakens border enforcement at a time of high illegal crossings. They insist that DHS funding should move forward without additional restrictions tied to immigration policy.
Shutdown Deadline Nears
If Congress fails to reach an agreement before the funding deadline, parts of the federal government, including Homeland Security operations, could face a shutdown. Lawmakers from both parties say talks are ongoing, but no compromise has yet been finalised.
The standoff highlights continued divisions in Congress over immigration and national security spending as budget negotiations intensify.
