SCO Must Shoulder Greater Responsibility for Regional Peace
Chinese President Xi Jinping, addressing a banquet in Tianjin attended by nearly 20 world leaders, said the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) must assume “greater responsibilities” in safeguarding peace and stability across Eurasia. He noted that the forum should not only focus on security but also take the lead in driving shared economic growth and sustainable development.
Unity Through Consensus and Cooperation
Xi stressed that the SCO has become an essential platform for fostering consensus among member states. He urged countries to deepen trust, reinforce solidarity, and strengthen cooperation in trade, technology, energy, and security. According to him, the challenges of a shifting geopolitical environment require member nations to act in coordination rather than isolation.
Expanding Role Amid Global Uncertainty
The Chinese president highlighted that global uncertainties, from conflicts to trade disputes, demand stronger multilateral responses. He said the SCO must set an example of regional cooperation, balancing national interests with collective responsibility. By expanding its scope, the organisation could play a greater role in ensuring long-term stability, promoting economic connectivity, and addressing security challenges that affect all members.
