SC To Rule On Pleas In Karur Stampede Case

The Supreme Court will deliver its order on October 13 regarding petitions linked to the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives. The petitions were filed by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and other groups, demanding an independent probe supervised by a retired Supreme Court judge.

Court Questions SIT Composition

A bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and N.V. Anjaria reserved its verdict after hearing arguments. The judges questioned the Madras High Court’s earlier decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) made up solely of Tamil Nadu police officers, raising concerns about jurisdiction and impartiality.

Tragedy Background

The Karur incident occurred on September 27 during a political rally in Velusamypuram, Tamil Nadu. Overcrowding and lack of crowd control measures were cited as major causes. Following the disaster, calls for accountability and an independent investigation grew louder.

What Comes Next

The Court’s ruling will be crucial in determining whether the probe stays with the state SIT or is handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The outcome may also set a precedent for how similar tragedies are investigated in the future.
