SC Refuses Urgent Hearing On IndiGo Cancellation Plea

The Supreme Court has declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition related to IndiGo’s ongoing flight cancellations. The petitioner had sought immediate intervention, citing large-scale disruption across the country, but the court said an urgent hearing was not required at this stage.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked that the issue was already being handled by the government and aviation authorities.

Court Notes Government Measures Already In Place

The bench observed that passengers were facing serious inconvenience, with delays and cancellations at major airports. However, it said that regulators had already taken steps, such as fare caps and notices to the airline, and therefore the court would wait before issuing any directions.

The matter can be listed in normal course if necessary, the bench added.

Disruptions Continue At Airports

The petition had pointed out chaos at airports, including long queues, missed flights and high fares for alternate bookings. Multiple passengers were said to be travelling for urgent reasons, including medical appointments.

So far, IndiGo has cancelled hundreds of flights due to crew shortages linked to new duty and rest rules. Refunds and rebooking support are being offered, but many passengers report delays in processing.

Pressure On Airlines And Regulators

Aviation experts said the crisis has highlighted gaps in planning and communication. Airlines have been asked to add capacity, and the DGCA has issued notices to IndiGo for explanation.

Customer rights groups have said passengers can seek compensation through existing consumer laws if they suffered losses.
