SC Refuses to Extend Deadline for Waqf Registration

The Supreme Court has declined to extend the deadline for uploading waqf property details on the UMEED portal. Several petitioners, including organisations and individuals, had sought more time citing difficulties in completing the process.

Petitioners Directed to Approach Waqf Tribunals

The Court said that anyone facing genuine issues with the portal or documentation must approach the concerned Waqf Tribunal rather than seek an extension from the Supreme Court. It observed that the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, clearly provides a mechanism for redressal and that tribunals are the appropriate authority to examine such grievances.

Concerns Raised Over Portal Functioning

Petitioners argued that technical glitches, confusion over required documents, and insufficient time made compliance challenging. They also raised issues related to uploading details of “waqf by user” lands. The Court, however, maintained that these concerns can be examined case-by-case by the tribunals and declined to interfere with the statutory timeline.

Deadline Remains; Boards Under Pressure to Comply

With the deadline unchanged, state Waqf Boards and mutawallis now face urgency to complete registration. Authorities say the UMEED portal aims to improve transparency, prevent encroachment, and create a nationwide digital record of waqf assets.
