SC Clears Vantara, Jairam Ramesh Questions Swift Closure

The Supreme Court accepted a Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) report and closed all complaints against Vantara, the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre established by Reliance Foundation in Jamnagar. The court found no legal violations.

Allegations Investigated

The case began with Public Interest Litigations filed in early August 2025, alleging animal smuggling, non-compliance with wildlife laws, financial irregularities, and violations under various environmental and trade statutes. The SIT probe found all animal acquisitions were lawful, welfare standards met prescribed norms, and there was no evidence of wrongdoing.

Congressional Criticism

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the speed with which the case was concluded. He remarked that while India’s judicial system is often slow, in this case it moved “with the greatest of speed.” He also questioned the use of a “sealed cover” for the SIT report.

Key Outcomes

  • The Supreme Court bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and P. B. Varale accepted the SIT’s findings and noted full regulatory compliance.
  • All petitions and complaints covered in the SIT report have been closed, and the court barred any future proceedings based on the same allegations.
  • Vantara welcomed the verdict, saying the allegations were baseless and the court’s order vindicated its work.
