Savukku Shankar Gets Interim Bail, HC Flags Arrests

The Madras High Court has granted interim bail to YouTuber and journalist Savukku Shankar, questioning the pattern of his repeated arrests by the police. The court ordered his release on interim bail on medical grounds, taking note of submissions that he suffers from multiple health conditions requiring treatment. The interim bail is valid for a limited period, after which he will be required to surrender unless further orders are passed.

Court Questions Use of Criminal Process

While granting relief, the High Court raised serious concerns over the repeated arrests of Shankar in different cases within a short span of time. The bench observed that frequent arrests can amount to an abuse of the criminal justice process and result in unnecessary curtailment of personal liberty. The judges underlined that constitutional protections, including the right to life and personal freedom, must be respected even while investigating allegations.

Bail Conditions and Ongoing Cases

The court clarified that the interim bail does not amount to a clean chit and does not express any view on the merits of the cases pending against him. Shankar has been directed to comply with bail conditions and cooperate with the legal process. The order has renewed debate on law enforcement practices, free speech, and safeguards against misuse of arrest powers.
