Saudi’s “Sleeping Prince” Dies After 20‑Year Coma
Prince Al‑Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al Saud, known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has died at the age of 36 after remaining in a coma for nearly 20 years. The Saudi Royal Court confirmed his death on July 19, ending a long chapter of hope and heartache for the royal family.
Tragic Accident at Military Academy
Born in April 1990, Prince Al‑Waleed was the eldest son of Prince Khalid bin Talal Al Saud and a great‑grandson of King Abdulaziz. At age 15, he was training at a military academy in London when a serious car accident in 2005 caused severe brain injuries and internal bleeding. He slipped into a coma and was soon moved to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh for life‑long care.
Family’s 20‑Year Vigil
Despite his unresponsive state, intermittent movements—such as finger twitching—offered fleeting hope to family and followers. His father remained steadfast, refusing to withdraw life support and sharing regular updates on social media. International medical experts from the U.S. and Spain were consulted, but the prince never regained consciousness.
Funeral Held in Riyadh
Funeral prayers were held on July 20. Men gathered after the Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque, while women prayed after Dhuhr at King Faisal Specialist Hospital. The Great Imams Council and members of the royal family extended condolences, praising the dignity and patience shown throughout the prince’s long ordeal.
Legacy of Patience and Faith
The prince’s 20‑year coma made global headlines, symbolising unwavering parental love and religious faith. Known affectionately as the “Sleeping Prince,” his story resonated across Saudi society and beyond, highlighting both the power of hope and the fragility of life.
