Saudi-Pakistan Sign Mutual Defense Pact; India Ties Assured
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have signed a “Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement” pledging that an attack on one will be treated as an attack on both. The deal was formalised during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Riyadh.
Commitments in the Pact
The agreement commits both countries to enhance defence cooperation and strengthen joint deterrence against any external aggression. It also includes provisions for utilising all necessary military and defensive means when required.
India Relations Maintained
Saudi Arabia clarified that the pact does not represent a shift in its relationship with India. Officials stressed that the agreement reflects mutual security concerns and will not undermine Riyadh’s ties with New Delhi.
Regional Impact
Analysts believe the pact formalises long-standing security ties between the two nations. While it could influence the strategic balance in South Asia, its real impact will depend on how both sides implement the agreement.
