Saudi Arabia Eyes KAAN After F-35 Approval

Saudi Arabia is exploring further expansion of its air force capabilities even after receiving approval to acquire advanced stealth aircraft from the United States. Discussions with Turkey indicate possible cooperation on another fifth-generation fighter programme.

Saudi Arabia F-35 Purchase Plans

The United States approved the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in late 2025 under a strategic defence arrangement. The aircraft acquisition forms part of a broader military modernisation effort aimed at strengthening air power and deterrence capability.

The move followed extended negotiations concerning regional security balance and operational requirements.

Interest In Turkey KAAN Fighter Jet

Saudi Arabia is also examining participation in Turkey’s indigenous KAAN fifth-generation fighter programme. Officials from both countries have discussed defence industry cooperation and potential joint investment opportunities.

The project could involve production collaboration and technology participation alongside procurement, reflecting interest in long-term industrial capability.

Expanding Regional Defence Partnerships

The potential dual-track strategy shows an effort to diversify defence suppliers while upgrading operational readiness. Cooperation between Riyadh and Ankara has already included unmanned systems and technical partnerships.

Future collaboration may expand into aviation and missile defence technologies as countries pursue advanced systems and domestic industrial growth.
