Sammy Says India Tour Tests West Indies ODI Level
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy believes the ongoing India tour has provided a valuable measure of where his team stands in ODI cricket, particularly with qualification for the 2027 World Cup becoming increasingly important.
Sammy Calls India Tour a Key ODI Test
West Indies have already lost the three-match ODI series after defeats in the opening two games, but Sammy said facing the world’s top-ranked side has exposed both the strengths and weaknesses of his squad.
He highlighted the batting as a positive, with West Indies producing competitive totals on favourable pitches, but admitted the bowling attack had struggled to contain India’s powerful top order.
Sammy said greater discipline and consistency would be required if West Indies are to compete regularly against leading ODI teams.
West Indies Face Challenges Away From Home
West Indies have improved their home ODI record in recent years, winning three consecutive home series between 2024 and 2025 after a difficult previous decade.
Their away record, however, remains a major concern. West Indies have not beaten India in an ODI series in India since 2002 and have struggled for bilateral success against Full Member nations overseas.
Sammy said the India series had clearly demonstrated the standards his team must reach.
World Cup Qualification Adds Urgency
The tour comes amid financial difficulties at Cricket West Indies, including a 25% reduction in international player retainer fees.
Sammy acknowledged the situation but urged players to view strong performances against India as an opportunity to enhance both their international standing and future prospects.
He also stressed that batters must convert strong starts into bigger scores, particularly on high-scoring surfaces where totals above 400 may not always be enough.
