Sachin Responds As Anderson Mentions Kohli Amid Trophy Talks

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar offered a calm yet pointed response after veteran England pacer James Anderson brought Virat Kohli into a conversation focused on the legacy shared between Anderson and Tendulkar. The two legends were present for the unveiling of the newly named Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, which will now be awarded during future India–England Test series, replacing the Pataudi Trophy in title but not in spirit.

During the event, Anderson reflected on his battles with both Indian greats. He noted having dismissed Tendulkar nine times and Kohli seven times in Test cricket, highlighting both as formidable opponents who brought out the best in him. As he mentioned Kohli’s name, Sachin interjected with a touch of humor and grace:
“There is no need to…”, subtly implying that the moment was not about comparisons but about shared respect.

Mutual Respect

The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy was created to celebrate two enduring pillars of modern cricket—one from each side of the Test rivalry. Both players embody excellence and longevity, and the trophy symbolizes mutual respect and the spirit of fair competition.

Anderson also shared an anecdote from the India–England Test at Edgbaston in 2022, when Kohli told him, “This is the last time we’re going to play against each other.” Anderson responded, “Why? Are you retiring?”—a moment of light-hearted exchange that reflected a relationship built on competition and deep admiration.

Tendulkar, meanwhile, made it a point to ensure that the Pataudi legacy continues. He personally reached out to cricket boards, ensuring that the Pataudi Medal of Excellence remains part of the tradition, awarded to the captain of the winning side.

Cricket Rivalry

The dynamic between Anderson and India’s greatest batters—Tendulkar and Kohli—has defined multiple Test series over two decades. While statistics show Anderson dismissed Tendulkar and Kohli several times, it was never just about the numbers. It was about skill, patience, and resilience—qualities that turned these rivalries into timeless cricketing duels.

Tendulkar’s dignified response highlighted the spirit of the occasion. Instead of allowing the discussion to veer into unnecessary comparisons, he brought the focus back to legacy and mutual admiration.
