Russian Tanker Heads To Cuba Amid Oil Crunch

A Russian tanker carrying crude oil is heading to Cuba despite the US pressure campaign that has sharply tightened fuel supplies to the island. The shipment comes as Cuba faces a severe energy crunch, with blackouts and supply shortages worsening after oil flows from key partners fell sharply in recent months.

Russian Tanker Heads To Cuba

The tanker, identified as Anatoly Kolodkin, is carrying roughly 650,000 to 730,000 barrels of Russian crude and is moving toward Cuba’s Matanzas port. If fully delivered, it would mark Cuba’s first major oil import in more than two months and could provide temporary relief to the island’s strained fuel system.

Cuba Fuel Crisis Deepens Under Oil Pressure

Cuba has been struggling with a worsening fuel shortage that has disrupted electricity supply, transport and essential public services. The crisis intensified after a broader US-led squeeze on oil access reduced the island’s regular inflows. With limited domestic production and fewer incoming cargoes, Cuba has been left heavily dependent on irregular external support.

US Stance Adds To Geopolitical Attention

The tanker’s journey has attracted wider attention because it comes despite sanctions pressure and the broader US effort to isolate Cuba’s energy supply chain. At the same time, recent reports suggest Washington may not block this specific shipment, indicating a possible humanitarian exception or tactical shift. The delivery also underlines Russia’s continuing role as an emergency energy supplier to Cuba during a period of heightened geopolitical strain.
