Russian Missile Attack on Kyiv Kills Nine
Russia launched a major overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv, killing at least nine people and injuring more than two dozen as strikes damaged residential buildings across the Ukrainian capital.
Russian Missile Attack Hits Kyiv
More than a dozen explosions were reported as ballistic missiles and drones targeted several districts of Kyiv. Local authorities said at least 28 people were injured, including four children, while the casualty figures remained subject to revision as rescue operations continued.
The updated death toll was higher than the four fatalities initially reported. Emergency workers searched damaged buildings and treated residents affected by fires, falling debris and blast waves.
Kyiv Residential Buildings Badly Damaged
A residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was partially destroyed after its lower floors collapsed, leaving people trapped beneath the rubble. Warehouses and other structures in the district also caught fire.
Damage was additionally reported in the Solomianskyi and Darnytskyi districts. Fires broke out in apartment buildings, while nearby vehicles and infrastructure were damaged. Parts of the city also experienced temporary electricity disruptions.
Authorities deployed firefighters, medical teams and rescue equipment across the affected areas. Residents were asked to remain in shelters while air-raid warnings continued.
Ukraine Seeks Stronger Air Defences
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for additional Western air-defence systems, particularly Patriot batteries and interceptor missiles capable of countering ballistic weapons.
Ukraine has struggled to intercept high-speed missiles as Russia increases the frequency and intensity of its attacks on major cities. The latest bombardment was Kyiv’s second significant attack within a week.
Russia has repeatedly denied deliberately targeting civilians, although its strikes have caused extensive damage to residential areas and public infrastructure throughout the war.
