Russia Slams U.S. Tariffs, Calls It “Neocolonial Agenda”

Russia has sharply criticized the United States after recent tariff threats were issued against India over its continued purchase of Russian oil. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the move as part of a “neocolonial agenda,” accusing Washington of trying to dominate international trade through coercion and intimidation.

Trump Warns of Higher Duties on Indian Goods

U.S. President Donald Trump recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports and warned that duties could rise to 100% unless India halts Russian oil imports. He alleged that India is reselling discounted Russian crude at profit while failing to take a clear stance on civilian casualties in Ukraine.

India Pushes Back

India has firmly rejected the allegations, calling the tariff threat “unjustified and unreasonable.” Officials stated that purchasing Russian oil is a sovereign decision based on energy security and affordability. India also noted that several Western nations, including the U.S., continue trading with Russia in sectors like energy and fertilizers.

Economic Impact and Strategic Signals

Economists estimate that expanded tariffs could reduce India’s GDP growth by up to 0.2 percentage points. India currently accounts for a major share of Russia’s oil exports and remains a significant buyer of Russian military hardware. Both countries have maintained deep strategic and defense ties despite global pressure.

Global Realignment and Rising Tensions

Russia’s response comes amid shifting global alliances and growing criticism of Western trade practices. Moscow reaffirmed its support for a multipolar world and deeper engagement with the Global South, challenging what it views as Western attempts to isolate nations that refuse to align with U.S.-led policies.
