Russia Says 660 Ukrainian Drones Downed

Russia said its air defence forces shot down 660 Ukrainian drones overnight in one of the largest reported drone attacks on Russian territory and annexed Crimea since the start of the war.

Russia Ukraine Drone Attack

The Russian Defence Ministry said the drones were intercepted across more than a dozen regions, including areas near Moscow, Crimea, and over the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. The scale of the reported attack points to Ukraine’s continued use of long-range drones to pressure Russian military and infrastructure networks far from the front line.

Russian officials did not immediately report major casualties from the overnight interceptions.

Moscow Drone Interceptions

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 47 drones heading towards the Russian capital were intercepted by air defence systems. Emergency services were deployed to areas where drone debris reportedly fell.

Authorities said airport and transport safety measures were reviewed during the alert. Russia has repeatedly faced drone strikes near Moscow in recent months, with airspace restrictions and temporary airport disruptions becoming more frequent during major attacks.

Crimea And Black Sea Targeted

The Defence Ministry said drones were also destroyed over annexed Crimea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Crimea has remained a major target in the conflict because of its military bases, logistics routes and strategic link to Russian operations in southern Ukraine.

Ukraine has not immediately commented on the latest Russian claims. Kyiv generally maintains that its long-range strikes are aimed at weakening Russia’s military capacity and supply infrastructure.

War Enters Drone Escalation Phase

The latest incident highlights the growing role of drones in the Russia-Ukraine war. Both sides have sharply increased drone use for battlefield attacks, air defence saturation and strikes on energy, logistics and military targets.
