Russia Reacts to India Buying Venezuelan Oil

Russia has responded after reports suggested India may purchase Venezuelan oil as part of evolving trade arrangements, reiterating that New Delhi independently decides its energy sourcing based on commercial interests and security of supply.

Russia Reaction on Indian Oil Purchase

Russia said India is free to buy oil from any country and confirmed it has received no official communication about ending Russian crude imports. Moscow described India as a long-term diversified buyer that adjusts procurement depending on market conditions.

The reaction followed remarks by US President Donald Trump indicating India could broaden crude sourcing beyond Russia. Russian officials emphasised India has historically avoided dependence on a single supplier.

India Venezuelan Oil Import Plans

India imports nearly 88 percent of its crude requirement and frequently shifts suppliers based on price, logistics and refinery compatibility. Discounted Russian oil rose sharply in India’s import basket after 2022 but has fluctuated with global price changes.

Venezuelan oil is a heavy grade suitable for several Indian refineries, while replacing volumes with lighter US shale would require blending and increase processing costs. Analysts therefore view the move as diversification rather than replacement.

India Energy Security Strategy

Officials maintain oil procurement decisions remain commercial and aimed at affordability and stable supply, reflecting India’s multi-supplier energy security policy.
