Russia Offers AL-41 Engine Upgrade for India’s Sukhoi-30MKI Fleet
At Aero India 2025, Russia has proposed an upgrade for India’s Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets by equipping them with the advanced AL-41 engine, which is currently used in Russia’s fifth-generation Sukhoi-57 stealth fighters. The offer aims to enhance the performance and operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) frontline combat aircraft.
The Sukhoi-30MKI fleet, which currently runs on AL-31 engines, is the backbone of the IAF. The proposed AL-41 engine offers increased thrust, better fuel efficiency, and greater reliability. It is designed to improve the aircraft’s speed, agility, and endurance, allowing for superior performance during high-speed maneuvers and long-range operations. The upgrade would also bring the Sukhoi-30MKI closer to modern fifth-generation fighter jet capabilities.
Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) confirmed the offer, stating that the AL-41 would significantly enhance the aircraft’s combat capabilities. With a larger thrust-to-weight ratio and advanced technological improvements, the new engine could provide a major boost to India’s air power.
The IAF operates 272 Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft, making it the largest fleet of a single fighter type in the country. The aircraft serves multiple roles, including air superiority, ground attack, and strategic deterrence. Given the need for modernization, the proposed engine upgrade is expected to be a key consideration in India’s efforts to maintain a technological edge.
Discussions regarding the feasibility, cost, and integration of the AL-41 engine into India’s existing fleet are expected to take place in the coming months. If accepted, the upgrade could significantly enhance India’s air defense capabilities.
