Russia Launches Heaviest Wave of Strikes on Ukraine in Weeks
Russia has launched its most extensive aerial assault on Ukraine in weeks, firing 574 drones and 40 missiles in a coordinated overnight attack. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the strikes targeted several western regions, marking one of the most intense barrages of the conflict in recent months.
Casualties and Civilian Damage
The wave of attacks caused widespread destruction. At least one person was killed and 15 others injured, Ukrainian officials confirmed. Residential neighborhoods in Lviv were among the worst affected, with several homes and a kindergarten damaged. In Mukachevo, a U.S.-owned electronics factory was struck, injuring multiple employees and halting operations.
Ukraine’s Air Defence Response
Despite the intensity of the attack, Ukraine’s air defence systems managed to intercept most of the drones and missiles. Authorities stated that the interceptions prevented even greater destruction, though some missiles still managed to penetrate defences and cause damage.
Timing Amid Peace Talks
The attack coincided with ongoing diplomatic efforts to push forward peace negotiations. U.S.-led talks are currently underway, aiming to secure a ceasefire and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling them evidence that Russia has no interest in genuine peace efforts.
Ongoing Conflict Outlook
The latest strikes underline the continued volatility of the conflict, showing that while international diplomacy is pressing for de-escalation, military actions on the ground remain intense. The attack has renewed calls from Kyiv for stronger Western support in air defence capabilities.
