Russia in Talks to Supply More S-400 to India
Russia has confirmed that it is in talks with India to supply additional S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. Dmitry Shugayev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, said discussions are ongoing and highlighted that India already operates the system.
Background on Existing Deal
India signed a $5.5 billion deal in 2018 to acquire five S-400 systems from Russia. Deliveries were delayed due to supply chain disruptions, but the final two systems are now scheduled for handover in 2026 and 2027.
Significance of the S-400
The S-400 Triumf is regarded as one of the world’s most advanced long-range air defence platforms. It can track and intercept multiple aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles, making it central to India’s air defence strategy.
Strategic Implications
The new negotiations underline the enduring defence partnership between India and Russia. Despite geopolitical pressures and India’s expanding ties with the West, New Delhi continues to prioritize strategic autonomy and maintain its long-standing military cooperation with Moscow.
