Russia Hits Ukraine Energy Grid with 400 Drones

Russia launched one of its largest drone attacks on Ukraine overnight, targeting critical energy infrastructure in several cities. Ukrainian officials reported that over 400 drones were used in the assault, with explosions hitting areas in Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, Vinnytsia, and Odesa. The attack injured at least 15 civilians and led to major power outages across the country.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated that while most of the drones were intercepted, 12 drones and one ballistic missile successfully struck their targets. Energy facilities, including substations and distribution lines, suffered significant damage. In Kryvyi Rih alone, an estimated 80,000 households were left without electricity.

Focus on Energy Infrastructure

The strikes were concentrated on Ukraine’s power grid, following a pattern seen in previous Russian operations aimed at weakening the country’s civilian infrastructure. Power plants and substations in multiple regions were shut down as a precaution, while emergency crews began immediate repairs under difficult conditions.

Authorities warned that power outages may persist for several days in some areas. Despite the damage, no fatalities have been reported so far, and medical teams are treating the injured civilians.

Growing Pressure on Ukraine’s Defences

This latest wave of drone and missile strikes marks a continued escalation in Russia’s summer offensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for Western nations to urgently supply more air defence systems, stating that the country’s energy and public services are increasingly vulnerable to aerial attacks.

International observers have also expressed concern over the humanitarian implications of repeated strikes on civilian infrastructure, especially as Ukraine prepares for winter. The Ukrainian government said it remains committed to restoring power swiftly and reinforcing defences around key installations.
