Russia Bans Fuel Exports Through Year-End

Russia has announced a partial ban on diesel exports and an extension of its gasoline export ban through the end of 2025. The measures are aimed at prioritising domestic fuel availability amid supply pressures.

Reason Behind Move

The decision follows a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, which disrupted refining operations and caused shortages in several regions.

Scope And Exceptions

The diesel export restrictions apply mainly to non-producer sellers, while gasoline bans extend to both producers and resellers. Exports under intergovernmental agreements—such as with Mongolia—are exempt. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said the step was necessary to stabilize domestic supplies.

Domestic Impact

Some Russian regions are already experiencing fuel shortages, particularly in higher grades of gasoline. Authorities are drawing on stockpiles to cover the supply gap.

Global Oil Market Reaction

The restrictions have influenced international oil markets, pushing up Brent crude and diesel futures, which posted strong gains after the announcement.
