Russia Backs India’s Bid for Permanent Seat at UN Security Council
Russia has expressed its strong support for India’s bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), adding its voice to a growing list of nations backing India’s candidacy. The endorsement came during the ongoing UN General Assembly session, further bolstering India’s claim for a permanent seat on the UNSC.
Bhutan and Portugal Also Endorse India’s UNSC Candidacy
In addition to Russia, Portugal and Bhutan have also thrown their weight behind India’s UNSC bid. Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay highlighted India’s economic growth and leadership role in the Global South as key factors that merit its inclusion as a permanent member of the Security Council.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for reforming the global governance system to ensure greater representation and transparency. “We want to see a reformed and inclusive UNSC that reflects the geopolitical realities of today’s world,” Montenegro stated.
Support From France and the United Kingdom
The recent endorsements from Russia, Portugal, and Bhutan come on the heels of similar support from France and the United Kingdom (UK). UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had earlier called for expanding the UNSC to include permanent representation for Africa, Brazil, India, Japan, and Germany.
French President Emmanuel Macron, too, advocated for India’s inclusion, stating, “Let’s make the UN more efficient. We need to make it more representative and that’s why France is in favour of the Security Council being expanded.”
The chorus of endorsements reflects growing international consensus on the need for UNSC reforms, especially in enhancing representation and including emerging global powers like India in its permanent membership.
Growing International Support for India’s UNSC Seat
With endorsements from key players like Russia, France, and the UK, India’s bid for a permanent seat at the UNSC is gaining momentum. These nations recognize India’s role as a leader in the Global South and its contributions to global peace and security.
The push for expanding the UNSC’s permanent membership to include countries like India, Brazil, Japan, and Germany aims to make the global governance structure more representative of today’s geopolitical realities.
