Russia has renewed its support for India and Brazil to become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, arguing that any expansion of the powerful body should strengthen representation from the Global South rather than add more Western countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said India and Brazil should be included as permanent members of an expanded UN Security Council, pointing to their growing global influence and the need for broader representation.
Speaking during the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Lavrov said reform of the Security Council should better reflect the interests of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Russia has repeatedly supported India’s long-standing demand for permanent membership of the UNSC.
Lavrov Opposes More Permanent Seats for West
Lavrov also argued against allocating additional permanent seats to Western countries, saying they are already overrepresented in key international institutions.
He said any expansion should instead correct what Russia views as an imbalance in the current structure of the Security Council.
The UNSC currently has five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom.
India Pushes for UN Security Council Reform
India has intensified its campaign for reform of the Security Council, arguing that the institution’s membership no longer reflects current economic, demographic and geopolitical realities.
India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, known collectively as the G4, have called for expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories.
India has also recently received renewed backing from several countries for permanent membership, strengthening New Delhi’s case for reform as negotiations continue at the United Nations.
