RSS Chief Warns on Thiruparankundram Dispute
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat has said that the ongoing dispute related to Thiruparankundram in Tamil Nadu can be resolved within the State without immediate intervention by the RSS at the national level. He made the remarks while addressing a public event in Tiruchirappalli, noting that the issue is currently under consideration before the Supreme Court.
RSS Intervention Only if Required
Bhagwat said the RSS would step in only if organisations working on the ground in Tamil Nadu felt the need for wider support. He stated that Hindu groups in the State are capable of addressing the matter on their own and expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved in a manner favourable to them. He added that since the matter is sub judice, restraint is necessary until the legal process is completed.
Background of the Thiruparankundram Row
The controversy centres on the lighting of the traditional Karthigai Deepam lamp at Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai district, where the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple is located alongside a dargah. Disagreements emerged following court directions on where the lamp should be lit, leading to objections, protests and legal appeals. The Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court seeking clarity on the issue.
Political and Public Reactions
Bhagwat’s comments triggered sharp reactions from political parties in Tamil Nadu. Some leaders criticised the remarks as unnecessary interference in a sensitive local matter, while others urged all sides to respect judicial proceedings and maintain communal harmony until the court delivers its verdict.
