Rishabh Pant Fined ₹30 Lakh for IPL Over-Rate Breach

In the final league fixture of IPL 2025, Rishabh Pant, captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), was fined ₹30 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a Code of Conduct breach. The infraction occurred during LSG’s match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Stadium on May 27. This marked LSG’s third slow over-rate offence of the season, triggering a heftier penalty under IPL rules.

The IPL’s Code of Conduct includes provisions for cumulative breaches related to match pace, and Pant’s leadership failure in maintaining over-rate standards pushed him into a higher penalty slab.

Full Team Penalized as Per Code

As part of the punishment, the rest of the LSG Playing XI — including the designated Impact Player — were each fined ₹12 lakh or 50% of their individual match fees, whichever was lesser. This collective penalty underscores the IPL’s effort to enforce timely match conduct, especially in high-profile games with significant playoff implications.

While Pant’s personal performance in the match was extraordinary, with an unbeaten 118 off just 61 balls, the disciplinary penalty overshadowed the achievement to some extent. LSG posted 227/3, but RCB chased it down in just 18.4 overs, driven by an explosive knock from Jitesh Sharma.

No Suspension Under Revised IPL 2025 Code

Despite it being the team’s third offence, Pant avoided a match suspension thanks to the updated IPL 2025 guidelines. Earlier versions of the Code of Conduct prescribed match bans for recurring over-rate issues. However, the new regime emphasizes escalating monetary penalties instead of on-field suspensions.

This change in policy appears aimed at maintaining consistent player participation while still holding franchises accountable for match discipline. The BCCI’s approach is expected to continue influencing team strategies, particularly around bowling rotations and time management in high-stakes fixtures.

As LSG exits the tournament without a playoff spot, the financial penalties and on-field disappointments close a mixed season for both Pant and his squad.
