Revanth Reddy Awaits Congress Stand on Maoist Policy
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has stated that the state government will not announce its position on engaging with Maoist insurgents until the Congress party finalizes its national policy. Emphasizing the need for a unified and cohesive approach, he said the state cannot act in isolation on such a critical internal security matter. The issue of continuing or ending anti-Maoist operations, such as ‘Operation Kagar’, will be deliberated upon only after clarity emerges at the central party level.
Operation Kagar Under Suspension Pending Party Deliberation
‘Operation Kagar’, a key counter-insurgency campaign aimed at suppressing Maoist activities in Telangana’s interior regions, is currently under review. Revanth Reddy acknowledged the significance of the operation but underlined that any decision regarding its future must align with the Congress party’s national vision on how to deal with left-wing extremism. The Chief Minister suggested that the matter would likely be discussed in upcoming internal meetings of the party leadership.
Past Precedents Shape Current Approach
The state’s consideration of peace talks is not without precedent. In 2004, during the Congress-led government in united Andhra Pradesh, formal talks were initiated with the Maoist leadership under the guidance of then-Home Minister Jana Reddy. That experience, both its opportunities and setbacks, continues to shape the policy outlook in present-day Telangana.
As discussions within the Congress party progress, the Telangana government is maintaining a watchful and coordinated stance. The Chief Minister reiterated that the final call on dialogue or crackdown would be made only after thorough consultation and alignment with the central party’s position. The issue, he noted, is of national importance and requires a long-term, non-partisan approach to ensure peace and stability in affected regions.
